What is the difference between ring doorbell 1 and 2? Ring Doorbell 1 vs 2!

After knowing all the benefits and safety features of a smart video doorbell I decided to get one for myself. Then, by researching and reading blogs for hours I found out that Ring Video Doorbells are the most popular. The smart video doorbells by Ring have advanced features that other doorbells lack and for a good reason it is the most popular video doorbell company.

The next question which I had is which Ring video doorbell should I get for me. Again I did some research to find out the differences between Ring doorbell 1 and 2.

So, what is the difference between ring doorbell 1 and 2? The major difference between Ring doorbell 1 and 2 is their video resolution. The Ring doorbell 1 has 720p HD resolution whereas the updated model Ring doorbell 2  has 1080p HD resolution. Ring doorbell 1 has an internal battery that lasts for 6-12 months and Ring doorbell 2 has a removable battery pack but it lasts only for 6 months.

The battery is another major issue between the Ring doorbell 1 and 2. Apart from that, there are a lot of minor differences such as field of view, sizes, as well as colours. Also, the Ring doorbell 1 has a lot of issues and bugs which are fixed in the next updated doorbell.

However, by reading Ring doorbell 1 has bugs this don’t fall into the trap of buying the new Ring doorbell 2. Most people think that the latest version of the Ring doorbell is suitable for them and fulfils their needs. The differences between the Ring video doorbell 1 and ring video doorbell 2 are very few. How significant these differences are, solely depends on how you want to use this doorbell.

What is the difference between ring doorbell 1 and 2?

In today’s technological advanced world you just cannot miss smart home devices such as Smart Video Doorbells. Smart video doorbells are necessary for security and many people passionate about technology use these kinds of devices.

Smart video doorbells have become popular in the past few years because by using advanced technology and innovation now you can not only make your life easy but also more secure.

Ring Doorbell

Video Resolution

The biggest difference between Ring doorbell 1 and Ring doorbell 2 is the video resolution. The quality of the 1080p HD video is far better than the quality of the 720p HD video. So, people often go for the Ring doorbell 2 as it is offering higher quality resolution than its previous generation model.

Users who are looking to get a doorbell for general protection will have no problem using the Ring doorbell 1. Burglars who want to steal or damage your property will not know the resolution of the video captured by the doorbell. Whichever doorbell you choose to install will equally restraint burglars.

However, as the video resolution of Ring doorbell, 1 is 720p HD the video quality is expected to be blurry and soft. Even if the video quality is blur it does its job pretty well. You can identify who was in the video although clarity is missing. If you want to use a doorbell for general usage such as observing cars and people near your door then Ring doorbell 1 is sufficient.

But, if you can’t compromise on quality and want to be utter sure of who was in the video then go for Ring doorbell 2. It has crisp clear video footage as well as live streams and its video quality is surely better than Ring doorbell 1. The video quality can sometimes be blurry on live streams due to your WiFi connectivity issue.

Check your WiFi speed if you find that live streaming is blurry may it be on Ring doorbell 1 or 2. Changing WiFi routers has worked for many and they have got enhanced speed hence better video streaming. However, you don’t need to worry as the saved videos have accurate video quality.

Another reason to upgrade on Ring doorbell 2 is better night vision and quality video. However, the night vision feature is the same in Ring doorbell 1 and 2. But, you get to see a better night vision due to the video resolution difference. 1080p HD video has better definition and clarity than 720p HD. At night the video recorded will be black and white in colour and night vision quality appears better on Ring doorbell 2 due to its video resolution.

Battery Recharge

Actually, there is not much of a difference in the power source of Ring doorbell 1 and 2. The only difference you need to face is when your doorbell runs out of battery and you need to recharge it.

You can easily check the battery status of your doorbell through the Ring app from your mobile. Both Ring doorbell 1 and 2 have rechargeable batteries to keep the video stream running. However, the recharging process is upgraded in the Ring doorbell 2.

Ring doorbell 2 has a quick-release battery feature that allows you to just remove the battery and charge it. In the previous generation doorbell, you were required to remove the doorbell itself to recharge it. After feedback from many Ring doorbell 1 users, this feature was added to the next generation doorbell.

The users of Ring doorbell 1 needed to remove the entire doorbell and keep it on charging. The good thing is that you only need to remove the doorbell for a charge once in a while. Basically, you need to uninstall and reinstall the doorbell whenever you want to charge it. Luckily it doesn’t require much time but is an added hassle.

The upgraded Ring doorbell 2 has a hardwired option where you never want to worry about battery life. The installation process is a bit tough and time consuming but is worth it as you never have to remove batteries to recharge. Recently, Ring was purchased by Amazon and there are a lot of chances of new products, designs, as well as colours.

How much did Amazon pay for Ring? (Shocking!!)

Battery Life

Battery life is a big factor while buying any device and some people have battery life as their priority while buying any device. Charging the device from time to time is boring. Devices running out of battery when you need is the most frustrating thing to happen.

Above I mentioned the process of removing the doorbell or battery when the charge is drained. Surely we don’t want to do this process often. Depending on the usage the battery of the Ring doorbell 1 lasts at least 6 months and sometimes even up to a year. If you have people constantly visiting your house and ringing the bell 20-30 times a day then the battery will drain super quick.

However, still, it is worth it as you just need to recharge the battery once or twice a year. The Ring doorbell 2 also promises to have 6-12 months of battery. But as the user report suggest the battery life on Ring doorbell 2 drains faster than Ring doorbell 1 and 12 months of working with a single charge is very less likelihood of happening.

The better video resolution of Ring doorbell 2 is the reason why the battery drains faster than the Ring doorbell 1. But, the ease of charging of the Ring doorbell 2 due to the quick-release battery feature does compensate for less battery time. You can check the battery life of the doorbell on the Ring app and you will receive a notification when the battery is about to die.

Battery life not only depends on use but also on temperature changes. Ring tweeted that the operating range of temperature for the Ring doorbell is between -5ºF to 120ºF. So, if you live in areas where the temperature is higher than 120ºF or lower than -5ºF then your battery will drain much faster.

Field of View

The reason why you purchased a doorbell is to see maximum things going around your door front. So, better the field of view better it is for you. Surprisingly, the Ring doorbell 1 has a 180-degree field of view and the Ring doorbell 2 has just a 160-degree field of view. Yes, it is a downgrade in terms of field of view.

But, most of the Ring doorbell 2 users don’t complain as you are getting a better video resolution and a 160-degree field of view is more than enough. People need to be closer to the Ring doorbell 2 to capture their image. 20 degree seems a big difference of paper but actually, it isn’t that much.

The latest doorbells from Ring, Ring doorbell pro ($249) and Ring doorbell elite ($349) also have a 160-degree field of view which proves that 160 degree is the optimum field of view for doorbells.

Size

Size is not a big factor while purchasing devices like doorbells as the size doesn’t vary by much. All the doorbells manufactured by Ring are almost of the same size and there is not much of a difference.

The size of the Ring doorbell 1 is 4.98 x 2.43 x 0.87 inches (12.65 x 6.17 x 2.21 cm) whereas the size of Ring doorbell 2 is 5.05 x 2.50 x 1.08 inches (12.83 x 6.35 x 2.74 cm). As you can see there is not much of a difference between the size of Ring doorbell 1 and 2. The Ring doorbell 2 is slightly bigger than the first-generation Ring doorbell.

While buying a doorbell you need to know the exact size of it and checking whether you have adequate wall space to mount it. You need to get a ruler and check the measurement of your wall before purchasing any doorbell. If you have less space then the size will be an important factor while purchasing or else it doesn’t matter at all.

Colour

People like to have different options in life. Having a lot of options doesn’t necessarily mean that we use all of them. Different people have different choices, especially in terms of colours.

Ring doorbell 1 is available in four different colour variants. Venetian Bronze, Polished Brass, Antique Brass, and Satin Nickel are the four colours and you can only choose one as it is permanent colour finishes.

Ring doorbell

However, Ring doorbell 2 lets you have different colour options. After purchasing the Ring doorbell 2 you get two different coloured faceplates by default. The colours of the faceplate available are Satin Nickel and Venetian. Depending on your choice you can use any one of the faceplates and even change according to your mood.

I know that Ring doorbell 2 has fewer colour options than Ring doorbell 1 but in Ring doorbell 1 you need to use the same colour for your entire life. This is not the case with Ring doorbell 2 as it has two faceplates and there are chances that Ring introduces even more colours options in faceplates.

Price

There are some things in life where you cannot just compromise. Security is very important and is definitely priceless. Security is the difference between alive and dead. Personally, I never compromise on security and you also shouldn’t. Remember you are risking the lives of your loved ones for just a few bucks.

The price of Ring doorbell 1 is $99 whereas the price of Ring doorbell 2 is $199. Doorbells are a one-time investment and you are not going to change the doorbell until and unless it is damaged. I know Ring doorbell 2 costs double the price but it does offer some extra value. Depending on your use and budget you can fit any of the two.

If security is your priority then the price may not bother you. You could easily save up$100 in a month just by avoiding some unnecessary expenses. Also, you can get the latest flagship doorbells from Ring, Ring doorbell pro and Ring doorbell elite which have amazing features for ultimate safety and security.

Issues

We always prefer to draw a rough sketch before finally drawing the final sketch. Most of the new products work the same way. The first generation of any device has some bugs and issues which are resolved in the next-generation model.

Ring doorbell 1 obviously went through a lot of trials and test before releasing in the market but there is always room for improvement. There were several bugs and issues reported by the users of the Ring doorbell 1 which were successfully resolved in the Ring doorbell 2.

Motion detection had a big problem in the Ring doorbell 1 and it was very uncertain. I have used the Ring doorbell 1 and I have received a lot of false notifications which was experienced by other users too. The sensitivity of the motion detection can be changed in the Ring app but still, it didn’t stop the doorbell from giving false notifications.

The Ring video doorbell 2 had enhanced motion detection and you could change the sensitivity more precisely. This did solve the issue and the number of false notifications decreased considerably. The new models, Ring Video Doorbell Pro and Ring Video Doorbell Elite have customizable motion detection zone feature which is missing out on Ring doorbell 1 as well as Ring doorbell 2.

Latest Ring Doorbells: Compared

After fixing bugs and issues of Ring doorbell 1, Ring came up with Ring doorbell 2. But, Ring didn’t stop there it came up with a pro and elite version of the doorbell. The latest Ring doorbell Pro and Ring doorbell Elite is more advanced with more features and improvements over the Ring doorbell 2.

Recently, Ring has launched a new Ring doorbell 3 and Ring doorbell 3 plus. Also, the pro version of the doorbell has a new version named Ring doorbell pro 2.

The Ring doorbell pro and pro 2 has a power integration via ethernet making Ring doorbell pro the fastest doorbell on the market. However, this technology comes at a price and the newer doorbells are expensive than Ring doorbell 1 and 2.
