Does Chromecast Work Without Internet?

Google Chromecast lets you project videos from your computer, tablet, or smartphone to your Television. Once you’re done with the opening set up in the Google Home app, you can even move your Chromecast around multiple TVs easily.

The idea of Chromecast being a portable device is splendid. You can take it anywhere with you when you’re traveling. So, if you’ve one of them, you might want to know if it can work without the internet? To answer that question, yes, it does work without an internet connection.

However, for it to work, the casting should be from an Android 5.0 or succeeding device. Windows and iOS devices like iPads and iPhones don’t operate with Chromecast if it is not connected to the internet. Along with that, a Wi-Fi connection is also needed to set up a fresh Chromecast and for the firmware update on the gadget.

However, if you don’t have a stable Wi-Fi network and you’re a cellphone user and want to connect the Chromecast with the internet, there are two different methods for that. Either you can work with the hotspot on your smartphone or you can get a travel router.

Let’s dig in to learn more methods through which you can work with your Chromecast without needing standard internet!

Can I use my Chromecast without WiFi?

If you’re an Android user and use a smartphone like a Samsung Galaxy phone, it is possible to cast your phone’s screen on your Chromecast without the internet. Basically, this is screen sharing with your Chromecast.

However, the tablet or phone you’re using for casting should necessarily have a stable Wi-Fi connection, downloaded video, or cellular data to cast it on your Chromecast.

How To Run Chromecast Without Wi-Fi On Your Android Device?

You should update your Chromecast firmware feature so that you can cast without the Internet. Here are the steps to cast contents from your android device to Chromecast without internet:

How Can You Connect A Chromecast With Your Mobile Hotspot?

If you want to run your Chromecast and you’re not an Android user, you can use your mobile hotspot. It helps in a location where the internet connection is weak. Maximum smartphones come with mobile hotspot features that allow your smartphone to provide a Wi-Fi connection.

However, there are two important things that you should keep in mind while using your mobile hotspot with a Chromecast. These are-

  • It’ll use cellular data

You should know that using your smartphone as a mobile hotspot will use your cellular data. Along with that, casting and streaming videos can use loads of data. So keep checking your data plans and ensure that you’ve adequate data to run your Chromecast with hotspot.

  • You can either share or use a hotspot from the device

Indeed, you cannot share from the same device and use the hotspot. So, to overcome this, you should have an alternate device such as a laptop or tablet to cast from.

Now, how you can connect your Chromecast with the mobile hotspot. Here are the steps-

  • Firstly switch on your mobile hotspot.
  • Connect your Chromecast and the alternate gadget with the hotspot
  • Lastly, share the content from your alternate device.

How You Can Use A Travel Router With Your Chromecast?

Most hotels provide you with a Wi-Fi connection, however, it is possible that it might not connect with your Chromecast. Most of the time, if you want to use their Wi-Fi, they have a two-step verification process, Chromecast is not compatible with these kinds of Wi-Fi connections.

To solve this problem, you can get a travel router. Travel router connects with an ethernet wiring and creates a mini Wi-Fi connection of its own, in your hotel room. Then you can connect the Chromecast with the travel router. It will let you connect several devices with the hotel’s internet, and you won’t even have to pay additional charges for that.

However, the drawback here is, that the hotel room should have an Ethernet cable or port. If your hotel room fails to have a wired Internet connection, then you won’t be able to connect your travel router.

The guest mode in Chromecast lets your family and friends share content from their devices. This feature works with almost all types of devices such as tablets and phones. However, your Chromecast might not support some of the Apple apps.

Here are the steps to set up the guest mode as a host:

  • Open your Google Home app either on a tablet or phone.
  • Pick the Chromecast device.
  • Tap “Settings”.
  • Open the “Device Settings”.
  • Tap on the “Guest Mode”.

After you’ve enabled the guest mode, the guests can easily pair with the Chromecast device with these steps:

  • Select the cast symbol
  • Pick the “nearby device”
  • Follow the prompts on the screen.
  • If your device isn’t connected automatically, then you’ll have to insert a PIN. This PIN will be given by the host. The host will get this PIN on their gadget, it’ll be present in the Guest mode set up in the app.
